When I asked Instagram to send me their design dilemmas, the overwhelming question was ‘how do I design a room from scratch?’ and I get it, designing a room from scratch can feel overwhelming. Where do you even begin? With so many choices around layout, colours, lighting, and furniture, it’s easy to feel stuck before you’ve even started. The good news is: interior design follows a natural order. Once you understand the basics, you’ll be able to create a room that feels both functional and beautiful.
Here’s a simple, designer-approved framework to help you get started.

Step 1: Space Planning: Where Do I Start When Designing a Room?
Before you think about paint colours or cushions, start with the layout. Space planning is the foundation of any successful design.
Ask yourself:
What is this room for? (Relaxing, entertaining, working, dining?)
How do you move through the space?
Where does natural light fall?
Sketch a rough floor plan or use masking tape on the floor to map out where key pieces will go. Planning this way ensures your furniture and flow make sense before you invest.

Step 2: Lighting Design: How Do I Plan Lighting in a Room?
Lighting is more than just ceiling lights. It shapes the mood and functionality of your room.
Designers think in layers:
Ambient lighting: your overall room light, usually ceiling-based
Task lighting: brighter, focused light for reading, cooking, or working
Accent lighting: lamps, wall lights, or candles for atmosphere
But don’t forget the practicalities:
Do you already have sockets where you need them?
Are your switches positioned conveniently?
Could you add USB or C-plug sockets for easier charging?
Where should lamps and plugs sit so you aren’t trailing wires across the room?
Making these decisions early means your lighting will look beautiful and work seamlessly with daily life.
Step 3: Colour Palette: How Do I Choose Colours for My Room?
Colour sets the mood. Do you want the space to feel calm, cosy, energising, or bold? Start with something you love colour wise that's already in the room and build your palette around that. If you're starting with a completely empty base, choose a base shade and build your palette around it.
A useful trick is the 60-30-10 rule:
60% main colour (walls, large furniture)
30% secondary colour (textiles, rugs, curtains)
10% accent colour (artwork, accessories, cushions)
Tip: pay attention to undertones. Mixing cool greys with warm woods can feel unbalanced unless you bring in a bridging tone.

Step 4: Scale and Proportion: How Do I Choose the Right Size Furniture?
One of the most common mistakes people make is buying furniture that’s the wrong size. A sofa that overwhelms the room or a rug that floats too small in the middle can throw the balance off instantly.
Always measure before you buy. Better yet, tape out dimensions on the floor so you can see how pieces will fit. You can also use free design apps that will help you space plan. Make sure:
Sofas leave comfortable breathing space around them
Dining tables allow chairs to be pulled out easily
Rugs are large enough to anchor the furniture, not just float underneath a coffee table
Step 5: Creating Flow: How Do I Make My Room Look Cohesive?
A cohesive room doesn’t mean everything should match. Instead, look for a thread that ties it together such as a repeated colour, a consistent material like black iron or brass, or a design style.
Think about how this room connects to the rest of your home too. Each room can have its own personality, but a sense of flow makes the whole house feel intentional.

Step 6: Finishing Touches: How Do I Style a Room?
This is where your personality comes in. Styling is the layer that turns a well-planned space into a home.
Mix textures: linen, wool, rattan, velvet
Add greenery for life and freshness
Blend old and new: antiques alongside modern pieces tell a richer story than matching sets which can be boring and make a room feel flat.
Use accessories to express character through art, books, or objects collected on travels.
Styling is flexible, so don’t be afraid to update it seasonally or whenever you feel like a refresh.
Final Thoughts: Do I Need an Interior Designer?
Designing a room from scratch is about balancing function and beauty. By planning your layout, lighting, colour scheme, furniture, and styling in the right order, you’ll create a space that feels intentional and cohesive.
That said, even with a clear framework, there are countless little decisions that can feel overwhelming. This is where working with an interior designer can make all the difference. A designer can save you time, help you avoid costly mistakes, and create a home that feels truly you.
