1. Oversized Bows & Beautiful Ribbons

We've seen a huge resurgence of bows over the last two years, and it doesn't look like they're going anywhere this year! The bigger the bow, the better. Designers are going big with cascading bows on trees, mantels, wreaths, and even furniture. Think velvet, satin, or organza in deep tones like burgundy, forest green, and caramel, or go playful with candy pink and gold.

Try this:

  • Drape a wide ribbon around your Christmas tree for a luxurious finish.

  • Layer different textures—matte velvet with sheer organza.

  • Use smaller bows on garlands, vases, or table napkins for a cohesive touch.

2. Nostalgic Charm

Christmas season in the 90s just hit differently, didn't it? The bright lights, the tinsel, the imperfection of it all—it was all about creating magic for your family. Well, there's good news because Christmas 2025 is brimming with a sense of nostalgia. Think of that cosy, heartwarming feel of Christmas past. Expect colourful lights and mid-century baubles. You can even get the tinsel out if you want! Rejoice! Tinsel strands are back, and I absolutely love them.

3. Dark & Moody (A Touch of “Gothmas”)

For those drawn to something more dramatic, the moody Christmas trend affectionately nicknamed 'Gothmas' is here to stay. Think black velvet, deep jewel tones, antique brass, and plenty of candlelight. Very classy and opulent, it's also very simple to do.

How to style it:

  • Pair dark foliage (eucalyptus, spruce) with black or gold ornaments.

  • Add layers of candlelight for atmosphere—tall taper candles, clusters of tea lights, metallic lanterns.

  • Keep the palette tight to avoid overpowering the space.

4. Joyful, Playful Colour

If your taste runs more maximalist, you’ll love the return of unapologetic colour. 2025 is seeing bright pinks, electric blues, apple greens, and just generally 'fun' bright colours on ornaments and decorations. It’s all about joy, fun, and energy, perfect for homes with little ones.

Style tip: Anchor bright colours with neutral backdrops—not necessarily white, but stripped-back hues to really let the brightness pop and the details shine. A few statement baubles or ribbons can go a long way too.

5. Scandinavian Simplicity & Natural Texture

It'll be no surprise that Scandi minimalism continues to inspire Christmas styling, especially for those craving calm. Natural wood, dried botanicals, and muted beige, ivory, and sage green create a serene, timeless look that pairs perfectly with earthy interiors.

Try this:

  • Decorate with dried orange slices, wooden beads, paper stars, and linen ribbons.

  • Swap plastic garlands for natural foliage or foraged greenery.

  • Layer soft textiles like wool throws, linen stockings, and boucle cushions for warmth and tactility.

6. Jewel Tones & Warm Metallics

If you love rich, opulent Christmas décor but you're not ready to embrace 'Gothmas' vibes, this trend is your go-to. Deep emerald, ruby, sapphire, and amethyst hues meet gold, copper, and brass for a sophisticated festive palette. This scheme is warm, sumptuous, and elegant.

How to bring it in:

  • Mix jewel-tone baubles with metallic accents for depth.

  • Use velvet ribbons or cushions to echo the colours elsewhere in your room.

  • Finish with gold candlesticks or mirrored trays for light reflection.

7. Sustainable, Storytelling Decor

More than ever, people want their Christmas to feel conscious and personal, and this year is no exception. In today's economic climate, people are looking towards crafts, recycling, and nature. Remember, sustainability isn’t about sacrificing beauty; it’s about choosing pieces that last, upcycling, or supporting local makers. Think using dried fruits, pine cones, recycled wrapping papers, and paper stars/crafts.

Ideas to explore:

  • Make your own clay or paper ornaments.

  • Shop second-hand glass baubles, paint old baubles, or repurpose ribbons from previous years.

  • Opt for LED fairy lights for energy efficiency.

(And if you’re local to Essex, the Leigh-on-Sea markets are brilliant for finding handmade or vintage pieces that tell a story.)

8. Celestial Magic - Stars, Moons & a Touch of the Ethereal

Lastly, my personal favourite for this year. A quietly enchanting trend for Christmas 2025 is the Celestial look, inspired by the night sky, moonlight, and a sense of calm wonder. It’s about creating a space that feels softly illuminated and otherworldly, with shimmering textures, gentle light, and dreamlike details.

Think antique gold stars, crescent moons, delicate glass ornaments, and twinkling candlelight. The effect is romantic and timeless, perfect for anyone who wants their festive décor to feel serene and eye-catching rather than overly sparkly.

How to style it:

  • Layer warm candlelight and fairy lights to mimic the soft glow of starlight.

  • Choose ornaments in brushed gold, pearl, champagne, and smoky silver for a subtle shimmer.

  • Hang star and moon motifs from branches, mantels, or windows for a floating effect.

  • Pair with translucent fabrics like gauze or silk for a soft, weightless feel.

For an elevated look, combine celestial touches with a neutral or deep-toned backdrop—ivory, midnight blue, or charcoal. It keeps the aesthetic sophisticated and gently magical, rather than overly whimsical.

The Atelier's Top Christmas Picks

You may have noticed the Christmas décor starting to creep into shops—I certainly have! Here's a few pieces that have caught my eye this month:

Bringing It All Together

The most beautiful Christmas homes this year will tell a story, not just of what’s trending, but of who lives there.

Blend old and new, play with contrast, and choose details that make you smile. Whether that’s a forest-green ribbon, a retro bauble, or a handcrafted wreath, the magic of Christmas 2025 lies in connection, creativity, and comfort.
