Balancing Storage and Style

Rather than treating the dressing table as an afterthought, I made it the central feature. A run of wardrobes with a gap in the middle created a built-in dressing table that feels intentional and perfectly proportioned. Careful measuring ensured the wardrobes retained generous storage while framing the dressing area beautifully.

Pull-out Drawer Keeps Essentials Neatly Tucked Away

How often do makeup, hair styling tools, and other products clutter our bedroom sides? With this in mind, I created space for a smooth pull-out drawer designed to hide away all of the everyday mess. It is large enough to house hairdryers and other essentials, keeping the surface clean and uncluttered. Every detail was designed to combine function with elegance, and this drawer was stained in a dark wood to align with the colour palette in the room. It also adds depth and character to the space.

Wardrobe Internals

The wardrobes were designed to be as practical as they are elegant. Each side includes three drawers and a large hanging area split with open shelving, perfect for shoes, tops, or folded items. Above, three spacious overhead compartments provide storage for bags, suitcases, or less frequently used items. The central section houses the dressing table, while the third compartment is dedicated to coats, dresses, and longer hanging pieces.

To further maximise storage, we also added a freestanding chest of drawers, giving extra space for folded clothing or everyday items. This thoughtful layout ensures that every item has a home while keeping the bedroom organised and clutter-free.

Light, Space, and Reflection

Lighting can completely change how a room feels. In this design, a mirror above the dressing table not only provides a practical spot for getting ready but also reflects both natural and artificial light around the space. Carefully placed task lighting above the mirror ensures the area is functional for daily routines, while layered lighting throughout the nook keeps the bedroom feeling bright, open, and welcoming.

“Mirrors are magic for reflecting light and making a space feel larger.”

A Seamless Look

To prevent the wardrobes from dominating the room, their colour was matched to the walls. This subtle choice allows the joinery to blend seamlessly into the background. Shaker-style doors add texture and interest while maintaining a timeless, sophisticated look.

Hidden Storage Everywhere

Every inch matters in a bedroom. An ottoman bed provides generous hidden storage for seasonal clothes, bedding, or spare linens, complementing the wardrobes and dressing table while keeping the room uncluttered.

Why Build a Dressing Table Into the Wardrobes?

Here are the questions I’m often asked when suggesting this approach:

“Won’t I lose too much wardrobe space?” Not if it’s designed well. A central section with drawers and a mirror usually replaces less functional hanging space. Full-height wardrobes on either side often provide even more storage than before.

“Will it feel cramped or dark?” Never. Careful consideration of light, finishes, and proportions ensures the space feels open. Here, warm LED lighting and a large mirror keep the area bright and welcoming.

“Will it actually feel like a proper dressing table?” Absolutely. With the right materials, lighting, and layout, it feels purposeful and luxurious, creating a space built entirely around daily routines.

The Result

The final design is both practical and elegant: ample storage, a dedicated dressing space, and a cohesive look that belongs in the room. Most importantly, it reflects the client’s priorities, showing that with clever design, a non-negotiable can become the highlight of the space.

“A non-negotiable can become the highlight of a room when designed with care.”
